Google Adwords adalah program periklanan yang ditawarkan google kepada para pemilik situs yang ingin mempromosikan situsnya, dengan cara menampilkan link situs pengiklan di hasil pencarian untuk kata kunci (keyword) tertentu, biasanya terletak di bagian seperempat di sebelah kanan pada hasil pencarian google sebagai sponsored Link /pesan sponsor. Google Adsense menawarkan 3 program yang dapat diikuti oleh peserta adsense(publisher):

Intel Slates the Centrino 2 Chips for June, September - The quad-core powerhorses will arrive in the second wave

intel plans to release its upcoming Centrino 2 mobile processors in two distinct waves. The company will roll
out its first batch of mainstream 45-nanometer ex-Montevina CPUs in June this year. The quad-core mobile
processors will launch with the second wave in September.

The recently-branded Centrino 2 mobile chips will come with optional integrated Wi-Fi and WiMax technologies, while the platform's new Cantinga chipset will be able to offer integrated graphics.

The chip manufacturer's first quad-core mobile processor to be released is the Core 2 Extreme QX9300 CPU. It is expected to show up during the September launch with a stock core clock speed of 2.53GHz. The quad-core will feature an impressive L3 cache pool of 12MB and will come in a thermal envelope of 45 watts.

There is a single problem though: the processor alone will come with a price tag of over $1,000, which should discourage customers into buying it, at least until the first price cuts. However, given the fact that the processor can easily compete with any quad-core offering for the desktop sector, the performance boost would be proportional.

Intel will unleash the first wave of Centrino 2-branded processors in June. The first chips to emerge will be the mainstream offerings, such as the T9600 and P8600, running at 2.8GHz and 2.4GHz respectively. The high-end offerings will be comprised of the X9100 quad-core chip that will upgrade the current Core 2 Extreme X9000. It will run at 3.06MHz with a 44W thermal envelope.

The September launch will introduce the energy-efficient processors such as the SL9400 and SU9400, running at 1.86GHz and 1.4GHz, respectively. They will feature a thermal design power envelope of maximum 17 Watts, but the SU3300 chip will feature a thermal envelope of just 5.5 Watts. The low-power processors will have a package similar to the chips used inside Apple's MacBook Air.

"The notebook market has taken on a lot of the characteristics of the desktop market," said Dean McCarron, founder and Principal of Mercury Research. He also claimed that it's vital for a x86 CPU manufacturer to have a quad-core offering in the mobile portfolio. Also, according to McCarron, the new quad-core processors will power the so-called "transportables", such as HP's HDX gaming laptop.

AGO Observes Cendana Family’s Assets

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The State Attorney (Attorney General’s Office) stated that the assets of former president Suharto’s beneficiaries must be observed as they are to replace their father’s position as the defendant in the Supersemar Foundation civil case. Yoseph Suarda Sabda, a member of the state attorney’s team, said that the perspective is necessary so as there will be no impediment when the payment obligation must be fulfilled.

Yoseph acknowledged that the AGO has not yet had the complete data regarding the assets of Suharto’s six children. So far, he said, the AGO has only supervised the assets of Hutomo Mandala Putra (Tommy Suharto), Suharto’s youngest son. “Which are in Guernsey and in Bank Mandiri in the Timor Putra Nasional case.”

Earlier, Yoseph said that the late Suharto’s children have a burden replacing their father’s position as the defendant in the Supersemar Foundation civil case. The AGO as the state attorney charged the New Order ruler and Supersemar Foundation at the South Jakarta District Court US$425 million and Rp185 billion for the material losses and Rp10 trillion for the immaterial losses.

Juan Felix Tampubolon, Suharto’s lawyer, said that the AGO’s plan is unreasonable. “That doesn’t make sense. Overreact. They don’t have the right to scrutinize the assets, except the ones that are confiscated,” he said.
According to him, the principle of a civil claim is paying compensation. “A civil claim is addressed to the wealth of the defendant,” he said. So, said Juan, if the defendant dies, the wealth is inherited . “It’s not the beneficiary’s personal wealth,” he said. “Moreover the beneficiary can accept or refuse the claim.”

Former Suharto’s lawyer, Otto Cornelis Kaligis, stressed that what the beneficiary obtains is the right over all goods, rights and receivables. “A charge is not included in the inherited part,” he said. “As regards the debt the beneficiary must repay, it must also be clear, the amount or the cause of the debt.”

A civil claim expert from Padjadjaran University, Bandung, Isis Ikhwansyah, said that according to the Civil Code, a beneficiary in a civil claim case can in fact refuse or accept the case. “It means that if he refused the case, he mustn’t accept all the heritage,” said Isis when contacted by Tempo last Thursday (31/1).

Google's slowdown worries investors

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Google's top executives say all is well at the Internet search leader despite a rare earnings disappointment, but investors are worried something is amiss.
Concerns about how the feeble U.S. economy might affect Google contributed to a nearly 20 percent decline in the company's stock during January.
And now it looks like February will begin on a sour note.
Google shares dropped by more than 6 percent from their Thursday closing price of $564.30 after the company released fourth-quarter results that missed analysts' expectations.
Google earned $1.21 billion, or $3.79 per share, during the final three months of 2007 -- a 17 percent improvement over net income of $1.03 billion, or $3.29 per share, in the same period a year earlier.
It was the first time Google's quarterly profit has climbed by less than 25 percent since the Mountain View-based company went public nearly three and a half years ago.
Precisely what caused the letdown is likely to be a matter of intense debate in the next few days.
"There is a lot to scratch my head over about in this," Jackson Securities analyst Brian Bolan said late Thursday. "I might be up all night trying to figure it out."
Chief executive Eric Schmidt rebuffed the notion that the economy undercut Google's growth.
"I am happy to say we have not seen a negative impact from the rumors of a future recession," Schmidt told analysts in a conference call.
Company co-founder Sergey Brin said in an interview that the company had not seen evidence of the recent economic turmoil affecting its business.
"I'm very happy with things," Brin said. "I think things are going really well."
If not for stock awards given to its employees, Google said it would have made $4.43 per share -- a penny below the average estimate among analysts polled by Thomson Financial.
The earnings would have been even lower if Google had not benefited from an abnormally low tax rate of 25 percent in the quarter.
American Technology Research analyst Rob Sanderson estimated Google would have earned 11 cents per share less if the company had been taxed at its more typical rate of 27 percent.

After death, spotlight turns to Suharto’s billions

SINGAPORE: The demise of former Indonesian president Suharto has turned the spotlight on billions of dollars in state funds he and his family are said to have amassed during his three decades of iron rule.

Critics say his death on Sunday should not lie to rest efforts to recover the assets they say were creamed off — if they can still be found. In a 2004 report, the anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International alleged Suharto and his family amassed a fortune of between 15 and 35 billion US dollars during his presidency from 1966 to 1998. The figure placed Suharto, who died on Sunday, as the most corrupt leader in recent history.

But Suharto lawyer Juan Felix Tampubolon said the report was “rubbish” and “no different than what was reported by Time magazine.” In a 1999 article following what Time said was a four-month investigation across 11 countries, the US-based news magazine said it had traced $15 billion in wealth accumulated by Suharto and his six children. It allegedly included nine billion dollars in cash transferred from a Swiss to an Austrian bank shortly after Suharto stepped down in May 1998.

Last year, however, an Indonesian court last year ordered Time to pay libel damages of more than $100 million to Suharto for the article. Activists and analysts said the ruling, which Time vowed to fight, called into question the integrity of Indonesia’s judiciary.

“Certainly, there was large-scale corruption,” Australian academic Robert Elson, who wrote “Suharto: A Political Biography”, said. But he cautioned that measuring precisely how much money was missing would be difficult. Suharto did not lead an ostentatious lifestyle but rather wanted “strategic access to funding for political and other purposes,”

Leukemia

Introduction

Leukemia is cancer of your body's blood-forming tissues, including the bone marrow and lymphatic system. The word "leukemia" means "white blood" in Greek. The disease usually starts in the white blood cells.

Under normal circumstances, your white blood cells are potent infection fighters. These cells normally grow and divide in an orderly, controlled way, as your body needs them. But leukemia disrupts this process.

In leukemia, your bone marrow produces a large number of abnormal white blood cells. They look different from normal blood cells and don't function properly. Eventually, they block production of normal white blood cells, impairing your ability to fight off infection. Leukemia cells also crowd out other types of blood cells produced by the bone marrow, including red blood cells, which carry oxygen to tissues throughout your body, and platelets, which help form blood clots.

Leukemia isn't just a children's disease, as some people think. Leukemia has four main types and many subtypes — and only some of them are common among children. Treatment of leukemia is complex — and it depends on your age and health, the type of leukemia and how far it has spread.
Signs and symptoms

Signs and symptoms for each type of leukemia differ, but common symptoms include:
Fever or chills
Persistent fatigue, weakness
Frequent infections
Loss of appetite or weight
Swollen lymph nodes, enlarged liver or spleen
Easy bleeding or bruising
Shortness of breath when you're physically active, as while climbing steps
Tiny red marks in your skin (petechiae)
Excessive sweating, especially at night
Bone pain or tenderness

The severity of signs and symptoms depends on the number of abnormal blood cells and where they collect. You may overlook early symptoms of leukemia because they may resemble symptoms of the flu and other common illnesses.
Causes

Doctors classify leukemia in two ways.

Speed of progression
The first type of classification is by how fast the leukemia progresses:
Acute leukemia. In acute leukemia, the abnormal blood cells are immature blood cells (blasts). They can't carry out their normal work, and they multiply rapidly, so the disease worsens quickly. Acute leukemia requires aggressive, timely treatment.
Chronic leukemia. This type of leukemia involves more mature blood cells. These blood cells replicate or accumulate more slowly and can function normally for a period of time. Some forms of chronic leukemia produce no signs or symptoms and can go unnoticed or undiagnosed for years.

Types of cells affected
The second type of classification is by type of white blood cell affected:
Lymphocytic leukemia. This type of leukemia affects the lymphoid cells or lymphocytes, which form lymphoid or lymphatic tissue. This tissue is the main component of the immune system and is found in various places throughout your body, including your lymph nodes, spleen and tonsils.
Myelogenous (MI-uh-loj-uh-nus) leukemia. This type of leukemia affects the myeloid cells. The myeloid cell line includes cells that later develop into red blood cells, white blood cells and platelet-producing cells.

Major types
The major types of leukemia are:
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). This is the most common type of leukemia. It occurs in children and adults. It's also called acute nonlymphocytic leukemia.
Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). This is the most common type of leukemia in young children. ALL accounts for 80 percent of all childhood leukemias.
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). With CLL, a common adult leukemia, you may feel well for years without treatment. CLL is more common in Jewish people of Russian or Eastern European descent. It almost never affects children.
Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). This type of leukemia mainly affects adults. It's associated with a chromosome abnormality called the Philadelphia chromosome, which creates an abnormal gene called BCR-ABL. The BCR-ABL gene produces an abnormal protein called tyrosine kinase that doctors and researchers believe causes leukemia cells to grow and develop. A person with CML may have few or no symptoms for months or years before entering a phase in which the leukemia cells grow more quickly.
Other chronic myeloid disorders. Like CML, this group of diseases causes chronic leukemia by the creation of too few or too many myeloid cells. Chronic myeloid disorders include myelodysplastic syndromes and myeloproliferative disorders such as essential thrombocythemia, polycythemia vera and myelofibrosis. These conditions may lead to acute myeloid leukemia.

Other, rarer types of leukemia include hairy cell leukemia and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia.

Causes unclear
Doctors don't understand the exact cause of leukemia. It seems to develop from a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
Acute leukemia begins with one or a few white blood cells that have a lost or damaged DNA sequence. These cells remain immature in what's known as a blast form, but maintain the ability to multiply. Because they don't mature and then die as normal cells do, they accumulate and begin to interfere with functions of vital organs. Eventually, they overwhelm the production of healthy cells.

Chronic leukemia involves more mature blood cells. They replicate and accumulate more slowly, so the progression of the disease is slower but it can still be deadly. Experts aren't sure why this process begins.

Eventually, a shortage of normal white blood cells leads to infection, anemia and excessive bleeding. Too many abnormal white blood cells can impair the function of bone marrow and infiltrate other organs. Death usually results from bleeding or infection.
Risk factors

These factors place you at an increased risk of developing some types of leukemia:
Cancer therapy. People who've had certain types of chemotherapy and radiation therapy for other cancers have a slightly greater risk of developing certain types of leukemia many years later.
Genetics. Genetic abnormalities seem to play a role in the development of leukemia. Certain genetic diseases, such as Down syndrome, are associated with increased risk of leukemia.
Exposure to radiation and certain chemicals. People exposed to very high levels of radiation, such as survivors of an atomic bomb blast or a nuclear reactor accident, have an increased risk of developing leukemia. Exposure to certain chemicals, such as benzene — which is found in unleaded gasoline and tobacco smoke and used by the chemical industry — is also linked to greater risk of some kinds of leukemia.

However, most people with known risk factors don't get leukemia. And many people with leukemia have none of these risk factors.
When to seek medical advice

Persistent fatigue, weight loss, easy bruising, bleeding, swollen lymph glands and fever are possible indications of leukemia. If you have these signs or symptoms, see your doctor to determine the underlying cause.
Screening and diagnosis

Doctors often find chronic leukemia in a routine blood test, before symptoms begin. If this happens, or if you or your child has symptoms that suggest leukemia, you may undergo the following diagnostic exams:
Physical exam. Your doctor will look for physical signs of leukemia, such as pale skin from anemia and swelling of your lymph nodes, liver and spleen.
Blood tests. By looking at a sample of your blood, your doctor can determine if you have abnormal levels of white blood cells or platelets — which may indicate leukemia.
Cytogenetic analysis. This test detects changes in the chromosomes, including the presence of the Philadelphia chromosome. It can be done using a regular microscope or a more modern lab technology called fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH).
Bone marrow sample. If your doctor suspects leukemia, he or she may refer you to a doctor who specializes in cancer (oncologist) or a doctor who specializes in blood (hematologist). This specialist can use a needle to remove a sample of your bone marrow to look for leukemia cells.

You'll need additional tests to confirm the diagnosis and to determine the type of leukemia and its extent in your body. Certain types of leukemia are classified into stages, indicating the severity of the disease. Staging helps your doctor determine a treatment plan.
Treatment

Unlike other types of cancer, leukemia isn't a solid tumor that your doctor can surgically remove. The source of the problem is really the bone marrow. But you can't just remove bone marrow because it produces three basic types of cells — white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets.

Treatment for leukemia is complex. It depends on many factors, including your age and overall health, the type of leukemia you have and whether it has spread to other parts of your body.

Therapies used to fight leukemia include:
Chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is the major form of treatment for leukemia. This treatment uses chemical agents to kill leukemia cells. Depending on the type of leukemia you have, you may receive a single drug or a combination of one or more drugs. These drugs may come in a pill form, or they may be injected directly into a vein.
Biological therapy. Also known as immunotherapy, biological therapy uses substances that bolster your immune system's response to cancer.
Kinase inhibitors. For most people with CML, the drug imatinib mesylate (Gleevec) is the first line of therapy. Imatinib mesylate is a type of cancer drug called a kinase inhibitor. It was specifically developed to inhibit the BCR-ABL protein, and it has proved effective in treating the early stages of chronic myelogenous leukemia. Several newer kinase inhibitors are in development.
Other drug therapy. Arsenic trioxide and all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) are anti-cancer drugs that doctors can use alone — or in combination with chemotherapy — to treat a certain subtype of AML called promyelocytic leukemia. These drugs cause leukemia cells with a specific gene mutation to mature and die.
Radiation therapy. Radiation therapy uses X-rays or other high-energy rays to damage leukemia cells and stop their growth. You may receive radiation in one specific area of your body where there is a collection of leukemia cells, or you may receive radiation directed at your whole body.
Bone marrow transplant. This process replaces your leukemic bone marrow with leukemia-free marrow. In this treatment, you receive high doses of chemotherapy or radiation therapy, which destroys your leukemia-producing blood marrow. This marrow is then replaced by bone marrow from a compatible donor. In some cases, you may also be able to use your own bone marrow for transplant (autologous transplant). This is possible if you go into remission and then save healthy bone marrow for a future transplant, in case the leukemia returns.
Stem cell transplant. Stem cell transplant is similar to bone marrow transplant except the cells are collected from stem cells that circulate in the bloodstream (peripheral blood). The cells used for transplant can be your own healthy cells (autologous transplant), or they can be collected from a compatible donor (allogeneic transplant). Doctors use this procedure more frequently than bone marrow transplant because of shortened recovery times and possible decreased risk of infection.
Clinical trials. Some people with leukemia choose to enroll in clinical trials to try out experimental treatments or new combinations of known therapies.
Supportive care. No matter what kind of cancer therapy you choose, you'll likely need medications to control pain and side effects.
Coping skills

A diagnosis of leukemia can be devastating — especially for the family of a newly diagnosed child. Remember that no matter what your concerns or prognosis, you're not alone. The road ahead may not be easy, but these strategies and resources may make it easier:
Know what to expect. If you or your child is diagnosed with leukemia, find out everything you can about the type, the stage, the treatment options and their side effects. The more you know, the more active you can be in your own care. In addition to talking with your doctor, seek out information from reliable sources such as the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Be proactive. Although you may feel tired and discouraged, don't let others — including your family or your doctor — make important decisions for you. Take an active role in your treatment.
Maintain a strong support system. Having a support system and a positive attitude can help you cope with the issues, pain and anxieties that might occur. The concern and understanding of a formal support group or others coping with cancer can be especially helpful. Although support groups aren't for everyone, they can be a good source for practical information. You may also find you develop deep and lasting bonds with people who are going through the same things you are.
Set reasonable goals. Having goals helps you feel in control and can give you a sense of purpose. But don't choose goals you can't possibly reach. You may not be able to work a 40-hour week, for example, but you may be able to work at least part time. In fact, many people find that continuing to work can be helpful.
Take time for yourself. Eating well, relaxing and getting enough rest can help combat the stress and fatigue of cancer. Also, plan ahead for the downtimes when you may need to rest more or limit what you do.
Stay active. Having cancer doesn't mean you have to stop doing the things you enjoy or normally do. For the most part, if you feel well enough to do something, go ahead and do it. It's important to stay involved as much as you can.

The word "monopoly" came up repeatedly in e-mails from people concerned that Microsoft would stifle competition in the Internet search field.

Other readers said that Microsoft and Yahoo were a perfect fit and the deal would be good for consumers.

Shaun Carney said the deal would even help arch-rival Google.

"I think the increased competition this merger brings will force Google to stay on top of its game by offering more innovative Internet tools and expanding on the tools it already offers," he said.

Beware the bowl: Double dipping spreads bacteria

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Not every mother would allow her hair to be cut by her 4-year-old daughter, but Cindy Hurst thought it was a perfect idea.
Hurst, a 42-year old single mother from Phoenix, Arizona, has breast cancer and was going to lose her hair anyway during chemotherapy.

Not only was Hurst worried about her own prognosis, but she was afraid of her daughter Ellie's reaction to the news. "I'm the center of her universe," Hurst said. "I started thinking about how I would tell her."

Hurst is among hundreds of thousands of parents in the United States with the same dilemma, the American Cancer Society says. They are faced with the terrifying task of telling their children that Mommy or Daddy has cancer.

The cancer society recommends parents not keep their illness a secret and suggests they find a way to talk about it with their children. The group offers age-by-age advice on its Web site.

Two weeks after her diagnosis last October, Hurst broke the news to Ellie. She tried using vague terms and age-appropriate information. "I was expecting her to ask questions, but she would change the subject, so I didn't know if I was getting through to her."

Hurst thought it might help if she involved Ellie in the haircut. "She was so excited," Hurst recalls. "She got her little kid scissors and I said, 'Go for it! Cut it short everywhere!' "

An adult friend shaved the rest of Hurst's head. Young Ellie was intrigued by the change. "She was calm afterwards and she kept rubbing my head," Hurst said.
The hair-cutting session helped, but Hurst said Ellie didn't open up until she bought a doll aimed at helping children understand cancer, from a group called Kimmie Cares. "I noticed a turning point," Hurst recalled. "She finally understood."

The Kimmie doll comes with removable hair and a bandanna, similar to the kind worn by many cancer patients who lose their hair during chemotherapy.

The doll was the brainchild of Kim Goebel, who died of breast cancer nearly four years ago. Her sister, Kris Kalnow of Cincinnati, Ohio, has taken over the project.
"Kim never had children of her own," Kalnow said. "But she would see other women going through treatment, and many of them wondered how they would explain what they were going through to their children."

Kalnow points out that her sister was able to see the first doll completed two days before she died. "Kim's dream came true," Kalnow said. "It makes me look up to heaven and say, 'You did it.' "

The Kimmie doll is among a growing number of efforts to help children cope with the fear and uncertainty when a parent has cancer. For example, Gilda's Club, a national support organization for cancer patients and their families, has "Noogieland," whose programs serve children specifically.

The Children's Treehouse Foundation serves a similar purpose. The counseling program was started seven years ago in Denver, Colorado, and is now available at 21 cancer centers around the United States.

Through art therapy sessions and hospital tours, the Treehouse program helps the children of cancer patients deal with feelings of sadness, anxiety and anger.
During a recent session at the Erlanger Cancer Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, about a dozen children ages six to 12 toured the chemotherapy infusion and radiation rooms.

Guided by oncology nurse Janet Kramer-Mai, herself a breast cancer survivor, the group learned firsthand how tough having cancer can be.
"Cancer impacts the entire family," Kramer-Mai said. "We give kids the tools they need to cope with whatever's going on with Mom, Dad, Grandma or Grandpa."

That's what Chris Johnson of Trenton, Georgia, was looking for when he enrolled his two young sons in the program.

Johnson's wife, Stacey, learned she had breast cancer four years ago. He says the kids' support group has taken a lot of pressure off his wife. "The biggest benefit for the kids is just that it's a safe place to ask questions that are emotional to them."
Hayden Johnson, 11, gets something else from the sessions. "I like to know that I'm not the only one going through this," he said. "You can talk about it and nobody will go out and tell and make fun of you."

Chris Johnson admits he needs all the help and support he can get in reassuring his children. "You walk a fine line. You don't want to throw all the medical terms at them and be cold and clinical, but you don't want to shelter them either from the fact that this is a disease that kills people."

Liverpool fans bid to oust U.S. owners

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) -- Liverpool's American owners are facing a new takeover bid -- from frustrated fans of the Premier League giants.

The longshot member-share scheme launched Thursday aims to raise about $995 million to oust Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr. and fund a new stadium.

UAE-based group Dubai International Capital recently failed in a renewed bid to purchase the Merseyside club after losing out to Hicks and Gillett last March.

Rival Manchester United fans still opposed to the Glazer family's 2005 takeover of the Red Devils unveiled a similar scheme Thursday.

Drawing inspiration from FC Barcelona's model, Share Liverpool FC appealed for 100,000 fans to each contribute up to $9,950.

"Liverpool fans all over the world have a way of raising money to do what they want to do," said Rogan Taylor, who is spearheading the initiative.

"They've been to Istanbul and Athens in the last three years for Champions League finals and if you add the cost of those two trips together you're not far from the entry fee -- the price of owning this club forever.

"And nobody will ever will own it more than you do."

Stakeholders will be limited to a single share, with each member having one vote. Key decisions, such as managerial changes, will be made by an executive board elected for a minimum three-year term.

"The Chinese word for crisis is translated as opportunity, and there's a very good reason why that's the case," Taylor said. "It's very difficult to change things when everything is fine. Things are certainly not fine both on and off the pitch."

Rafa Benitez's side slumped to seventh in the Premier League standings on Wednesday -- 17 points behind leader Manchester United -- with a 1-0 defeat at West Ham.

To help fund Anfield stadium's replacement in nearby Stanley Park and refinance the loan used to purchase the Reds, Hicks and Gillett last week completed a $682 million refinancing package.

But the package leaves the 18-time English champion with debt topping $205 million.

Many fans were also angered by Hicks' admission late last year that he approached Juergen Klinsmann as a potential replacement for popular manager Rafa Benitez.

Taylor said that individuals "carrying weight and authority" were now required.

"That will beef up the proposal," he said. "If we can get it off the block, if we can get the first 10,000 we've got 50 million pounds ($99.4 million) pledged and we will begin to look like players."

The 32,000-strong Manchester United Supporters Trust -- England's largest such group -- said the race was on to become the first supporter-owned soccer club in the country.

"This is bound to spark fierce competition between the two sets of rival fans," the trust's chief executive Duncan Drasdo said. "We've been working on our own plans, which we'll reveal later in the season."

Drasdo said he believed a successful bid would require financial help from investment banks.

Defoe to Portsmouth but Benjani stays put

Defoe's arrival at Fratton Park was expected to be accomodated by Benjani moving to City, but the deal for the Zimbabwean international could not be completed in time.

It leaves Portsmouth, who also signed Czech international Milan Baros on loan during the transfer window, with a surfeit of strikers once the African Cup of Nations finishes later this month.

"I can't wait to get my boots on and get out there. I want to score as many goals as possible for Portsmouth," said Defoe who is set to make his debut at home to Chelsea on Saturday/

Defoe, 25, had failed to hold down a regular first-team place at White Hart Lane and was told he was free to leave the club by manager Juande Ramos.

The partnership of Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov had limited Defoe to mainly substitute appearances.

Defoe's contract was set to expire at the end of next season and Spurs were keen to avoid losing him on a free transfer.

The forward was left out of Fabio Capello's first England squad for the match against Switzerland on 5 February.

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp, who managed Defoe at West Ham, was delighted by his acquisition.

"Jermain is a top player," Redknapp added on Sky Sports News. "I signed him at West Ham when he was 15.

Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson had hoped to secure the services of Benjani, who has scored 12 goals this season.

Eriksson, who loaned out strikers Georgios Samaras to Celtic and Rolando Bianchi to Lazio in the last week, did complete a deal for 19-year-old Ecuador international Felipe Caicedo who signed from Swiss side FC Basle for a fee of around $10million.

Filippo Mancini, the 17-year-old son of Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini, has also signed for City, the Italian club said Thursday. Mancini had been on trial at Eriksson's club for a week.

Another major deal went through saw Brazilian striker Afonso Alves finally seal his move to Middlesbrough from Heerenveen, after he successfully gained a work permit on appeal.

The 27-year-old has agreed a four-and-a-half year deal with the Premier League club, worth almost $30million. .

Alves was in the crowd at the Riverside for Tuesday's 1-0 Premier League win over Wigan having started the process of undergoing his medical.

BARCELONA, Spain -- Thierry Henry scored the only goal of the match as Barcelona beat Villarreal 1-0 to reach the semifinals of the Spanish Cup on Thursday night.

With the first leg goalless, Barcelona went through 1-0 on aggregate after dominating the match in the Nou Camp.

Friday's draw saw Barcelona paired with Valencia while Racing Santander play Getafe.

Villarreal offered little threat and played the entire second half with ten men after Pascal Cygan was sent off shortly after Henry's 41st minute opener.

Cygan went for tripping Lionel Messi as the Argentine star went on a mazy run.

Cygan had received his first yellow card for obstructing Messi and from the free-kick Deco curled the ball into the area and Henry was left unmarked to nod home the opener.

Messi was outstanding in the second half with a series of brilliant runs, once beating four men to set up Henry with a chance.

With 16 minutes remaining, Barca were awarded a controversial penalty, but Messi saw his spot-kick brilliantly saved by the outstanding Diego Lopez.

Woods clings on to lead in windy Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Tiger Woods defied gusting winds to claim a one-shot lead at the halfway stage of the Dubai Desert Classic on Friday.

Woods carded a one-under-par 71 at the Emirates Golf Club for a two-round eight-under-par total of 136, finishing with two birdies in the final three holes to claim a slender advantage.

Ireland's Damien McGrane shot a superb 69 to be the nearest challenger to world number one Woods who is bidding for a fifth consecutive tournament win.

Organizers had to clear debris from the course before the start of the second round due to the strength of the winds and later starter Woods had to battle hard after dropping a shot on the first hole.

He recovered to reach the turn in one-under 34, but dropped shots on the 12th and 15th saw him back to six-under.

In typical Woods style he rallied for his 21st straight sub-par round dating back to last season, a chip and putt for a birdie on the par-five 18th keeping the run going.

Defending champion Sweden's Henrik Stenson stepped up his challenge with a two-under-par 70 and is tied with Thomas Levet of France in third place on six-under.

Seven players were a further stroke back on five-under including Spain's Sergio Garcia.

"I feel fine, pleased with anything in the red today," Woods said. "It was not a pretty day out there.

"We had a myriad of distractions out there and you had to be committed to what you're doing.

"You can make a great swing, do everything right and get a gust and look like an idiot. That's just the way it is."

Woods started the tournament with a seven-under-par 65 in placid conditions, coming off a runaway victory in the Buick Invitational on the PGA Tour, his first event of 2008.

Beckham vows to win back his England place

LONDON, England -- David Beckham is determined to win his place back in the England team after being left out of Fabio Capello's first squad for the friendly against Switzerland next week.

Speaking in Brazil just ahead of Thursday's squad announcement, Beckham said: "I will carry on working hard and trying to get back in.

"I won't get bitter and twisted because I am old enough and I have got enough respect for the manager to realize that if it does not happen, life goes on.

"I have been lucky enough in my career to come back from tough times and disappointments.

"If it doesn't happen (winning a 100th cap), I will come back from it again, in my way. If it does, then great."

Beckham has spent much of the last month training with Arsenal and their manager Arsene Wenger weighed into the debate on Friday by praising his high level of fitness.

"We were all amazed how good he was," he said.

"I believe the English national team still needs Beckham because he can still make decisions and his experience will be needed in the big games and that is why I am sure he will get his 100th cap."

Instead of linking up with the England squad next week, Beckham is now flying back to begin training with Los Angeles Galaxy ahead of the Major League Soccer season which starts in March.

Beckham has not played a competitive match since November's disastrous home defeat to Croatia which saw them eliminated from Euro 2008.

It was his 99th international cap and it was widely expected that Capello would award the former England captain his 100th against the Swiss.

But Capello was concerned about his lack of match practice and opted to give younger players an opportunity to impress ahead of crucial World Cup qualifiers in the autumn.

English Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick backed Capello's decision to drop Beckham but hinted he would like to see the midfielder eventually earn 100 caps.

"The coach picks the team, he picks the squad and the tactics, and the most important arguments he has to make are football arguments," Barwick said in the Guardian.

"In an ideal world, there's a logic to David Beckham having 100 caps but first and foremost it's the coach's decision and I respect that."

Beckham was also adamant that he had no thoughts of retiring from international football despite the latest snub.

"I don't want to retire yet and I don't plan on retiring from club or international football. But you never say never. Things might change that might make me feel maybe it is time.

"Some people might say that if I win 100 caps I should call it a day then and quit on my own terms but that decision can only come from me.

"I have always said that when I didn't feel I could play at the top level, I would retire. But I still feel I can play at that level."

For Capello's part he claimed he was not ruling out a possible return for Beckham later in the year.

"The reason that David is not in the squad is because he has not had any real match practice since playing in November. When I spoke with David on the phone yesterday (Wednesday) I advised him that he is still part of my plans and once he is playing regularly in America we will look closely at him again," said the Italian who took over from Steve McClaren after the Croatia defeat.

Romney: McCain adopting Nixon-like tactic

LONG BEACH, California (AP) -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney accused his rival John McCain of adopting underhanded tactics from Richard Nixon, the GOP president who resigned in disgrace.
"I don't think I want to see our party go back to that kind of campaigning," Romney said in his most pointed rebuttal yet to front-runner McCain's claim that the former Massachusetts governor favors a timetable for withdrawing troops from Iraq. Romney denies this charge and most media analyses have concluded that Romney wasn't using 'timetable' in the same way Democratic candidates have.

McCain's decision to level the timetable charge during the Florida primary before Romney could rebut it "was reminiscent of the Nixon era," Romney said. McCain ended up winning the Florida contest Tuesday.

Despite the incendiary reference to Nixon, Romney said of McCain: "I think he's a man of character." But he added: "I think he took a sharp detour off the 'Straight Talk Express,"' the name of the Arizona senator's campaign bus.
McCain adviser Steve Schmidt responded that Romney "is lashing out because he's unable to defend his comments about a timeline, albeit a secret one ... . John McCain has simply pointed out a fundamental difference between them at the time when John McCain was advocating a strategy for victory."

A prominent Romney surrogate, former House Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois, also chimed in Thursday with a reference to McCain's own scandal history. Hastert told reporters that he had worked with McCain on legislation early in his congressional career but "after the Keating Five scandal, he changed." By contrast, Hastert said Romney has "never been involved in scandal."

McCain was one of five senators involved in the Keating Five savings-and-loan scandal. The Senate Ethics Committee cited McCain for "poor judgment" but recommended no further action.

Both camps readied ad campaigns for the Super Tuesday contests in 21 states. Both called the buys significant, but it was not immediately clear just how far-reaching they would be.

At this point, Romney is preparing to run between $2 million and $3 million for five days of ads in most media markets in California and either on cable channels or local networks targeted to other key states, according to aides with knowledge of the deliberations who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the plans were not final.

McCain aides said he, too, was preparing to run a high volume of commercials on national cable channels and in key states.

But was no immediate dollar figure for McCain's buys and no detail on where Romney's spending will land. A substantial weeklong broadcast campaign throughout California can cost $3 million or more. Running ads coast to coast is even more expensive, so both campaigns were choosing states or districts they think they can win.

Romney is trying to get back on track after two losses to McCain in South Carolina and Florida. The Florida victory gave McCain a lead in the delegate count as well as the momentum in the GOP race.

After seven contests, Romney is down 83-59, with 1,191 delegates needed for the nomination and 1,023 at stake Tuesday.

California offers 170 delegates Tuesday; candidates are awarded three for each congressional district they win. McCain is leading in California polls, but Romney aides think he can win some districts.

Romney will run an ad in California starting Friday in which he portrays himself as the Republican most able to take on Hillary Rodham Clinton, the Democratic front-runner.

"She hasn't run a corner store. She hasn't run a state. She hasn't run a city," Romney says in the ad. "I have spent my life running things. I've learned how to run a business. I've learned how to run a state. I ran the Olympics. In each case I've brought change."

During a news conference later Thursday, Romney predicted he, not McCain, would benefit when GOP voters think about the general election.

"People are going to stop and say, `Who is going to post-up best against Hillary Clinton, who is going to post up best against Barack Obama, who can talk about change, who can talk about the future, who represents the past, and who represents the future?"'

Romney's strategy calls for seeking votes in states with heavy concentrations of Romney's fellow Mormons: California, Arizona, and Utah, home of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Romney, trying to become the first Mormon elected president, will attend the funeral of the church President Gordon B. Hinckley on Saturday in Utah. He will also campaign Friday in Colorado, followed by visits to Minnesota, Illinois and Missouri, key midwestern battlegrounds. In Missouri, a classic swing state, Romney enjoys the strong support of Gov. Matt Blunt.

Also on the tentative schedule were Tennessee and Georgia, Southern states where Romney has shown strength. Romney was likely to bypass delegate-rich New York and New Jersey after former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani decided to drop out of the race and support McCain.

Romney's home state of Massachusetts also votes Tuesday. His campaign tentatively planned to receive the Super Tuesday returns there. If he were to fail, Boston would be the most likely sight of his campaign goodbye.

Along with targeted ads, McCain is planning to rely on momentum and "free" news coverage that comes with it by holding rallies and news conferences in California and big winner-take-all delegates states, including New York and Illinois. McCain picked up the endorsement of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday, an event sure to garner loads of publicity.
With winner-take-all states his first priority, McCain's tentative travel schedule calls for him to travel coast to coast for general-election style rallies in Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.

U.S. officials: CIA kills top al Qaeda terrorist in Pakistan

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Abu Laith al-Libi, a wanted al Qaeda terrorist, was killed in Pakistan by a CIA airstrike, three U.S. officials told CNN Thursday.
Al-Libi was described as a senior al Qaeda leader believed to have plotted and executed attacks against U.S. and coalition forces, including a February 2007 bombing at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan during a visit by Vice President Dick Cheney.
He was on a "most wanted" list of 12 accused terrorists which was issued in October by the Combined Joint Task Force-82 -- an anti-terror unit in Afghanistan.

Earlier, a knowledgeable Western official and a military source confirmed al-Libi's death to CNN. The same official said al-Libi is "not far below the importance of the top two al Qaeda leaders" -- Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri.

The officials said al-Libi was killed by a missile from an airplane.

Radical Islamist Web sites announced al-Libi's death.

"May God have mercy on Sheikh Abu Laith al-Libi and accept him with his brothers, with the martyrs," said a eulogy posted on a main Islamist site, Al-Ekhlaas.

Al-Libi, 41, was of Libyan descent and was believed to have been in the Afghanistan/Pakistan border region, according to the U.S. military.
A U.S. counterterrorism official told CNN he was a significant, senior al Qaeda figure who had taken on a more prominent role in the organization in recent years. This official also confirmed that al-Libi was responsible for plotting attacks targeting U.S. and coalition forces as well as Afghan officials.

In an earlier role, he was a leader of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, which eventually merged with al Qaeda, the counterterrorism official said, and was responsible for planning attacks throughout North Africa and the Middle East. The official described al-Libi as part of al Qaeda's inner circle, who helped fill the void created by the capture or death of other senior people in the organization.

A U.S. military official with Combined Joint Task Force-82 said they have no information on al-Libi's death. But he added that CJTF-82 does not collect information from outside of Afghanistan, and would be informed of targeted operations only "if the Pakistani military share(s) that with us."

The Pakistani military said an explosion occurred in North Waziristan on Tuesday, and 12 people were killed. However, it was unclear whether this was the incident in which al-Libi was killed. Military spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas told CNN it was not clear who attacked whom and that he could not comment on the identities of the dead since local al Qaeda and Taliban affiliates removed the bodies and buried them.

The U.S. military placed al-Libi on its most wanted list in 2006, behind bin Laden, al-Zawahiri and Taliban leader Mullah Omar. In October, they announced rewards ranging from $20,000 to $200,000 for al-Libi and 11 other mid-level Taliban and al Qaeda leaders.

At that time, the military distributed posters and billboards with pictures and names of the insurgents around eastern Afghanistan.

Al-Libi and the others were described at the time by CJTF-82 spokesman Maj. Chris Belcher as "mid-level bad guys."

He appeared in a 2002 audio recording posted on an Islamist Web site, saying al Qaeda had regrouped and intended to expand its war to include assassinations and attacks against infrastructure.

He also appeared in a 2004 video that showed him participating in an attack on an Afghan army base.

Rep. Peter Hoekstra of Michigan, the top Republican on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, issued a statement saying al-Libi's reported death would be "a positive development" in efforts against terrorism.

"Intelligence points to, and his [al-Libi's] increasing role in al Qaeda propaganda suggests, that he would have been a top field commander and planner for al Qaeda," Hoekstra said. "His death, if confirmed, clearly will have an impact on the radical jihadist movement."

He said that through the committee, he would monitor the effects on al Qaeda operations.

Japan resumes Antarctic whale hunt

TOKYO, Japan (CNN) -- Japan has resumed whaling in the waters near Antarctica -- only days after groups hoping to stop it left the area, Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade told CNN on Friday.
The whale hunt resumed in the Southern Ocean on Thursday even as Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith arrived in Japan on a diplomatic visit. Australia opposes whaling, but Smith said the two nations "agree to disagree" on it.

"I regard the resumption of whaling in the last couple of days as disappointing," Smith said Friday.

"We would prefer if it hadn't occurred, but that's as a consequence of the Australian government having a strong view that whaling should cease."

Australian claims a section of the Southern Ocean as territorial waters, but that claim is not widely recognized.

Commercial whaling is banned in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary -- a protected area of 50 million square kilometers (19 million square miles) surrounding the continent of Antarctica.

But Japan is permitted to around 1,000 whales a year under international law because its whaling is considered to be scientific in nature. Anti-whaling groups view the whale hunters as poachers.

Japan has been hunting whales in the Antarctic and has a killing quota of almost 1,000 a year.

The whaling resumed after the Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd activist groups ended their disruptions. A Greenpeace spokesman said the group figures it helped save at least 100 whales during the 15 days it interfered with whaling operations.

A Greenpeace ship left the area on Jan. 26 to return to port for refueling. The Sea Shepherd left due to low fuel as well.

Iraq market bombers called mentally disabled

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Two mentally disabled women were strapped with explosives and sent into busy Baghdad markets, where they were blown up Friday, a top Iraqi government official said.
The bombs killed at least 53 people and wounded more than 175 at two popular pet markets on the holiest day of the week for Muslims, authorities said.
In both bombings, the attackers were mentally disabled women whose explosive belts were remotely detonated, Gen. Qasim Atta, spokesman for Baghdad's security plan, told state television.
An aide to Atta said that people referred to the bomber at central Baghdad's al-Ghazil market as the "crazy woman" and that the bomber at a second market had an unspecified birth disability.
The nationalities and identities of the women have not been released.
The U.S. military blamed the bombings on al Qaeda in Iraq.
"By targeting innocent Iraqis they show their true demonic character," said Lt. Col. Steve Stover, spokesman for the Multi-National Division-Baghdad.
"They care nothing for the Iraqi people; they want to subjugate them and forcefully create a greater Islamic sharia state," he said, referring to Islamic law.
The first bomber struck at al-Ghazil pet market around 10:30 a.m. The second blast happened about a half-hour later in a southeastern Baghdad market, according to the Interior Ministry.
Al-Ghazil pet market is a popular destination where people buy and sell cats, dogs, monkeys and other animals. Attackers have struck the market on Fridays -- its busiest day -- several times in the last year or so.
A January 2007 bombing killed 15 and wounded 52 at the pet market, and 13 people died and 58 were wounded in a November attack.
The violence, the bloodiest series of attacks in the capital since August, broke a brief stretch of relative calm as attacks and deaths dropped at the time of the 2007 increase in U.S. troop strength known as the surge.
On Thursday a parked car exploded in a predominantly Shiite district in the Iraqi capital, killing five civilians and wounding eight others, the Interior Ministry said.
The attack occurred after a string of roadside bombings that wounded 21 people, ministry said. In one, a bomb near the deputy minister of electricity's convoy wounded at least five people.
Also Thursday, a spokesman for the Polish military said Poland will withdraw its troops from Iraq by the end of October.
October 31 will be the last day of the Polish presence in Iraq, Maj. Dariusz Kacperczyk said in Warsaw.
New Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has promised to bring troops home from Iraq, where the country has been one of the larger contingents apart from the United States and Britain.
About 900 Polish troops are in Iraq, with most in Diwaniya, some in Baghdad and others in the southern city of Kut. Twenty-two soldiers from Poland have died during the nearly 5-year war in Iraq.
